They arrive in Dallas the following Wednesday, every carton intact, every corner square, nothing crushed on the pallet. Your receiving clerk opens the first carton, pulls a bag off the stack and hands the assembly to a technician. Eleven of those screens will never show a picture, and four more will fail inside three weeks: one column of dead pixels here, a touch panel that stops responding in the bottom-left corner there.

Nothing went wrong with the cartons. The bags did nothing wrong either, at least not while the screens were inside them. What killed those units happened in about two seconds, on your bench, when a charged assembly met a grounded human being.

Packaging catalogues never explain this part, and it is why the words “anti-static bag” on a supplier’s quotation are worth roughly nothing as written.

Your screens are not damaged in transit. They are damaged on arrival.

Static charge comes from contact and separation, and shipping is nothing but contact and separation: foam against glass, tape off a roll, a bag peeled off a stack of bags. The ESD Association’s table of typical generation voltages puts a polybag picked up from a bench at up to 20,000 V in a room at 10–25% relative humidity, and 1,200 V in a room at 65–90% RH. Picking up a plastic bag is not a peripheral risk next to the bag’s contents. It is the largest single voltage generator in the room, and it fires at the exact moment you expose the FPC tail and its connector, which are the only genuinely exposed conductors on a finished phone screen assembly.

Behind that connector sits a driver IC built to survive a few hundred volts at device level. The standard floor in a commercial datasheet is ±2,000 V on the human body model and ±500 V on the charged device model, and the ADS131M02 datasheet’s own footnote, citing JEDEC JEP155, notes that a 500 V HBM rating is enough to allow safe manufacturing with a standard ESD control process. A bag charges to thousands of volts in dry air. The assembly inside sits at a different potential. Charge can’t move, so it stays where it was generated until something conductive touches it. That something conductive is your technician.

Now the number that separates a real bag from a bag with a nice print job. Desco ESD Systems ran an energy-penetration test on an ordinary black conductive bag and measured over 416 nJ, against a Table 2 shielding requirement measured in tens of nanojoules. That same bag passes a surface-resistance check with a reading that looks excellent. It fails the only test that describes what happens when a charged object discharges next to your goods.

Figure basis: Desco ESD Systems technical Q&A on conductive versus dissipative packaging, quoting ANSI/ESD S541 Table 2 and reporting an energy-penetration measurement of a black conductive bag at over 416 nJ. Vendor test, not independently reproduced; checked 30 October 2026.

Which gives the most useful sentence in this article. Surface resistance tells you how fast charge drains off the bag. It tells you nothing about whether a discharge outside the bag reaches what’s inside. Two different physical properties, two different tests, two different sets of units.

Pink, black, or silver: what each bag actually does

Pink poly is a low-charging material. It is treated so it doesn’t generate much triboelectric charge when it rubs against the product, which is genuinely useful. It has no metal layer, so it is not a shield: a spark outside passes straight through. A supplier shipping 5,000 screens in pink bags inside a plain carton has bought dust protection and a photo opportunity.

Black conductive bags are carbon-loaded and do drain charge. As the Desco measurement shows, a conductive layer is not a shielding layer. They are also opaque, so nobody inspects anything, and the carbon can shed onto the polariser.

Metal-in bags are what belongs in a carton that crosses an ocean: a buried aluminium or metallised layer between a polyester dielectric and a dissipative inner film, which turns the bag into a crude Faraday cage. The certified version is MIL-PRF-81705E Type III, Class 2, which specifies 2.8 mil laminate, inner surface resistance of 1×10⁵ to <1×10¹² Ω, outer surface below 1×10¹² Ω, and an energy penetration limit under 10 nJ.

Specification source: SCS 81705 Series metal-in static shielding bag, as listed with TestEquity (MIL-PRF-81705E Type III, Class 2; <10 nJ per Method 4.6.9; dissipative inner surface 1×10⁵ to <1×10¹² Ω), checked 30 October 2026.

Note what the price actually is. The same 4×14 inch bag sells for $38.49 per hundred at distributor quantities, about 39 cents each, and that is the small-lot number rather than a container price. Buyers who negotiate bags by the ten-thousand pay a fraction of it.

Fee source: TestEquity listing for SCS 817414, 100 bags at $38.49, checked 30 October 2026. Distributor small-quantity price; bulk packaging pricing is substantially lower.

The bill you never file

Hard failures are the ones you can see: a black panel, a dead backlight, one column that never lights, touch that works everywhere except one strip. Those get claimed inside the RMA window, because a technician checks them before installation. They cost you the unit and the freight and nothing else.

Soft failures don’t work that way. A pulse that doesn’t break through still damages something: a marginally degraded junction, a bit more leakage, a gate oxide with a weak point in it. The assembly powers on, passes your incoming test, passes the customer’s bench test, gets installed, and fails in week three. By then it is not a dead-on-arrival unit. It is a warranty replacement on a phone that has already been reassembled once, and the argument is about whether your technician damaged it during fitting.

DOA rate is therefore a bad measure of this problem. Count the units that come back inside 90 days with a display or touch fault and no impact mark on the glass. If that number is higher than your DOA rate, you have a handling problem, and packaging is the cheapest part of the fix.

One more cost never reaches the spreadsheet. A distributor’s reputation is built on the technician fitting your part at 4pm on a Saturday. One screen that dies after installation costs more than the unit, because the next order goes to whoever that shop trusts.

Put the money side in one calculation per thousand units. At 39 cents a bag that is $390 per 1,000 screens. If your landed cost is $40 an assembly, substitute your own, the packaging pays for itself when it prevents 10 failures out of 1,000. That is one percent of the shipment. Everything past the tenth unit is margin you were giving away, before you count return freight, bench time, or the customer who quietly stops ordering.

Figure basis: Our arithmetic, 30 October 2026. $390 packaging cost per 1,000 units at the distributor price above; break-even is 9.75 units at a $40 landed cost. Your bag price, unit cost and claim rate move the result; the method is what matters.

What to put in your next purchase order

Vague specs get vague goods. These lines are short enough to survive a WeChat negotiation and specific enough that a supplier either has the paperwork or doesn’t.

Every assembly individually sealed in a metal-in shielding bag, MIL-PRF-81705E Type III, Class 2 or ANSI/ESD S541 compliant, energy penetration below 10 nJ per ANSI/ESD STM11.31.

Bag inner surface resistance between 1×10⁵ and <1×10¹² Ω, tested per ANSI/ESD STM11.11 at 12% and 50% RH. The 12% reading is the one that predicts winter.

Each bag printed with the ESD protection symbol per ANSI/ESD S8.1, a resistivity class, a shielding class, and the converter’s name and batch code. No batch code, no traceability.

Bag sealed by heat, or by folding the opening twice and taping it flat. An open bag inside a carton is a plastic sheet, not a shield.

Buffer outside the bag only. Foam, bubble wrap or EPE goes around the sealed bag, never between the bag and the glass, never against the FPC.

One unit per bag. Two assemblies in one bag rub against each other, and the friction is the charge source.

Lot test certificate on file, not a screenshot of a datasheet. You pay return freight to send a unit back in packaging that may have caused the fault.

Fix: bags are consumables, one trip and out. If a return costs $12 in freight, a 39 cent bag is not the line item to optimise.

Foam or bubble wrap inside the bag

Symptom: the assembly arrives with a bubble pattern imprinted on the polariser, or a scuff on the FPC.

Cost: two problems at once. Abrasion against the panel, plus friction between two dissimilar insulators inside the shield, which is the definition of a charge generator. Rejected cartons, or units that pass your test and fail later.

Fix: buffer outside the sealed bag, every time.

Testing units straight out of a dry carton

Symptom: the first ten units of a shipment fail at a higher rate than units tested an hour later.

Cost: you file an RMA on units that were fine, the supplier disputes it, and you lose because you can’t show when the damage happened.

Fix: let the carton sit in the room for a few hours, unpack on a grounded surface, strap on before the first bag is cut. Then test.

FAQ

Does anti-static packaging stop ESD damage completely? No. It removes the packaging and transport pathways. The remaining exposure is your own handling, which is why the unpacking rules above matter as much as the bag specification.

Pink, black, or silver: which one for phone screens? Silver metal-in for anything crossing a border. Pink is low-charging but not a shield, and black conductive is not automatically a shield either; the Desco test measured 416 nJ through one. Inside a single building, a dissipative bag on a grounded bench is usually enough.

Is vacuum packing better? No, and it is worse for this product. Vacuum pulls the film tight against the glass and the FPC, concentrates any trapped particle against the polariser, and leaves you a bag that can’t be resealed for a return. Flat, sealed, with the buffer outside.

How do I check a supplier’s bags without a lab? Two things. Ask for the lot certificate with energy penetration and surface resistance at 12% RH. Then buy a surface resistance meter and spot-check incoming bags yourself. A reading above 1×10¹¹ Ω means the bag is insulative and you are shipping screens in plastic film with better branding.

Do I need this for domestic reshipment? Yes, at a lower grade. Charge generation doesn’t care about borders; what changes is the exposure window. A two-day domestic van run is shorter than a three-week ocean container, so a dissipative bag on a grounded bench is defensible where a sealed metal-in bag is not negotiable.

My supplier says they use anti-static bags. Isn’t that enough? It describes a material, not your goods. Ask which standard, which class, and for the lot certificate. A supplier who answers in one message buys from a converter with a QPL listing; one who forwards a datasheet PDF is guessing.

If you are still comparing suppliers on unit price, the packaging question belongs in the same conversation as how to test a wholesale phone screen before buying in bulk and your phone screen warranty and RMA terms. The bag is the cheapest line in that negotiation. The claim it prevents is the most expensive.

Two related reads before you order: what is actually inside a full assembly with frame, which covers the driver IC and FPC you are protecting, and inventory planning for repair shops, which covers how long stock sits before it gets fitted.

Sources

Document

Issued by

一致的读数保持您的

cURL Too many subrequests by single Worker invocation.
